Little known fact about the 305:
It went from this with a gearbox under engine layout like the first Mini (and a front mounted fan driven by an around-the-corner belt)
To the now conventional arrangement with an end on gearbox

305! Some people say it’s impossible to only make 170hp out of 305 cubic inches, but GM showed them all and made 165.

I actually saw one yesterday, in the middle of Munich morning commute traffic. It did stand out, in a positive way.
Interesting, to me at least, is that the 205 (gti/cti/diesel and automatics excluded) used to have a similar engine/gearbox layout until 1987 or so. I actually own of the later ones, from 1986. The engine is tilted 70-something degrees, transmission and engine share oil and it has no timing belt or chain. The dash of the 83-87 205 looks very similar to the 305 dash.
